What is the Services Selection Board (SSB)?

The Services Selection Board (SSB) is a comprehensive personality and leadership assessment conducted for candidates aspiring to become officers in the Indian Armed Forces.

Unlike conventional written examinations, SSB evaluates how you think, behave, communicate, solve problems and perform under different situations.

The assessment is spread over 5 days and consists of psychological tests, group tasks (outdoor activities), interviews and conference designed to identify the qualities required in an officer.

The objective of SSB is not to test how much you know, but to understand whether you possess the qualities needed to lead men and women in challenging environments.

What are Officer Like Qualities (OLQs)?

Imagine you are going to appear for your Class 10 Mathematics examination. Naturally, you first study the Mathematics syllabus because that syllabus tells you what will be asked in the examination.

Similarly, every competitive examination has a syllabus.

When students prepare for SSB, people often tell them, "SSB is just a personality assessment."

That statement is incomplete. SSB is actually an assessment of whether your personality demonstrates the Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) expected from an officer in the Armed Forces.

In other words, OLQs are the syllabus of the SSB. If you understand those qualities and consciously work on improving them, your preparation becomes structured instead of random.

That is why understanding OLQs is the first step towards SSB preparation.
